Reject Punitive Pension Age Increase

The motion

That the Parliament rejects the latest report from the Centre for Social Justice on raising the current pension age to 75 years; believes that this action would have a disproportionate impact on poorer people in Scotland, especially women, plunging hundreds of thousands more into poverty; notes that the OECD produced data in 2018, which it understands indicated that the UK state pension was the worst pension scheme in the developed world; further understands that more than 170,000 older people in Scotland are already living in poverty and that lower paid workers and women are less likely to have a private pension and rely solely on the State Pension; acknowledges Scotland’s life expectancy is now 77 for men and 81 for women but that life expectancy for men in Glasgow is much lower at 73, meaning that more than half of men would never reach State Pension age; believes that healthy life expectancy is considerably lower, at 62.6 years for women and 62.3 for men in Scotland; acknowledges comments from Age Scotland that “Raising the State Pension age to 75 would be a retrograde step that would have a devastating impact on Scotland’s poorest older people”; considers that this, as well as what it sees as the injustices facing WASPI women and the clawing back of pension credit for people over 75, as a further attack on older people, and notes calls on the Scottish Government to reject any attempt by the UK Government to implement what it considers this punitive policy.
