Motion · S5M-18573 · 21 Aug 2019
Repression of Kurdish Politicians in Turkey
The motion
That the Parliament condemns the reported removal of People’s Democratic Party (HDP) mayors in the cities of Diyarbakir, Mardin and Van in Turkey by the Turkish Government; understands that these mayors were elected earlier in 2019 with absolute majorities despite what it considers significant repression during the election campaign and during the previous term; condemns the reported detention of 418 municipal council members and employees by the Turkish authorities; understands that these actions are part of a broader campaign by the Turkish Government to oppress and disempower the Kurdish population and their democratically elected representatives, and calls on the Turkish Government to release anyone who has been detained and ensure that the democratic rights of Kurds in Turkey and all Turkish citizens are respected.
