Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 9 September 2019 is Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Awareness Day; recognises that the consumption of alcohol during a pregnancy can lead to foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS); understands that this is a more severe condition than foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and stems from heavy and frequent drinking during pregnancy; is aware that FAS describes a range of neurodevelopmental impairments that result from prenatal alcohol exposure and can lead to several adverse consequences including miscarriage, still birth and low birth weight; believes that FASD is the leading known preventable cause of learning disability worldwide and that prenatal exposure to alcohol is linked to a variety of conditions such as poor memory, difficulties with speech and language, cognitive deficits, difficulty with judgement, reasoning or understanding consequences of actions and behavioural problems, as well as social and emotional delays; understands that FASD is the most common neurodevelopmental issue that healthcare practitioners come across, more than autism and ADHD combined; believes that 41.3% of pregnant women in the UK drink alcohol, which is the fourth highest in the world; considers that the awareness day serves as a reminder that no amount of alcohol is a safe during pregnancy, and observes the vital work that is being carried out by NHS Ayrshire and Arran’s Foetal Alcohol Advisory and Support Team, which is funded by the Scottish Government and is working to actively raise awareness to this important issue.
