The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the release of The Big Meeting, a new documentary film about the Durham Miners’ Gala, which was made by the filmmaker, Dan Draper; notes the film's moving, warm and accurate portrayal of the Gala as a celebration of working class music, culture, solidarity and internationalism; understands that the Gala has taken place every year since 1871 in the beautiful city of Durham and that the event attracts around 150,000 people from across the UK and abroad, including increasing numbers from the Lothian region; notes that, despite the closure of the mining industry, the Gala goes from strength to strength, and believes that this new film will help increase awareness of what it considers the greatest event in the Labour movement calendar.
