Challenge Poverty Week

The motion

That the Parliament recognises Challenge Poverty Week 2019, which runs from 7 to 13 October; notes that activities and events are taking place across Scotland, including in Dundee, aimed at highlighting the realities of and solutions to poverty and increasing public support for tackling poverty; understands that over one million people, including 240,000 children, are living in the grip of poverty across Scotland; considers that it cannot be right that so many people in Scotland have their opportunities and choices restricted by poverty; believes that women are more likely to be in low-paid jobs and more likely to be living in poverty than men; understands that particular groups of women, including disabled women and women from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, are at increased risk of experiencing poverty; recognises that flexible working, childcare and transport are particularly important for women living in poverty; considers that poverty can be solved by boosting incomes and reducing costs, and commends the work undertaken by organisations and communities across Scotland to loosen the grip of poverty on people’s lives.
