Walking Sports
The motion
That the Parliament recognises the importance of the Walking Sports initiative, which aims to get more older people active and engaged on a regular basis; notes that, in 2015, Paths for All, in partnership with Age Scotland, SAMH, the SFA and the SPFL Trust, developed walking football where no running is allowed, making for a slower version of the game; understands that the success of walking football led to the launch of walking netball in the summer of 2017, piloted in Grampian, but now available across Scotland; notes that there are currently four walking netball groups in Edinburgh; welcomes the physical benefits of walking sports, such as reduced blood pressure and cholesterol levels, prevention of heart diseases and strokes, and improved fitness and wellbeing; considers that walking sports help to connect older people to others with similar interests and have a positive impact on their health; notes that this development will help meet the Scottish Government's objective of reducing isolation and loneliness, and hopes to see the initiative expand in future years.
