Publication of Atlas of Childhood Obesity

That the Parliament notes the publication of the World Obesity Federation’s Atlas of Childhood Obesity; acknowledges that this publication provides the latest estimates of infant, child and adolescent obesity prevalence in 191 countries; is concerned that an estimated 254 million children and young people worldwide and an estimated 1.3 million in the UK will be obese by 2030; recognises that the report also indicates that the UK has only a 39% chance of achieving the World Health Organization target of "no increase in obesity prevalence by 2025"; understands that 16% of children in Scotland are at risk of obesity, and calls on the Scottish Government to work with food retailers and manufacturers to urgently address what it considers this public health crisis.
