David Richardson, Individual Transformational Story of the Year at the Alliance Awards
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates David Richardson on being shortlisted in the Individual Transformational Story of the Year category at the Self-Management Awards Ceremony, which are organised by the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE); understands that David experienced alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD), which reduces mobility, and had tuberculosis, pneumonia and an alcohol-induced epileptic seizure; acknowledges that, after this serious life-threatening episode, David spent three months in hospital and the last nine years in recovery; understands that, since 2017, he has been a peer volunteer for the Scottish mental health charity, Penumbra, working alongside others with ARBD, helping them with their own recoveries and relapses; acknowledges the support that Penumbra has given David, and considers that the awards will shine a spotlight on the people, projects and partnerships that are leading the way in self-management in Scotland, which is supporting people living with long-term conditions to access information and to develop skills that enable them to be "in the driving seat", and to live well on their terms.
