Motion · S5M-19334 · 8 Oct 2019
Edinburgh Zoo Chimpanzee Unit
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Edinburgh Zoo on the opening of its world-leading chimpanzee research unit; understands that Budongo Research Unit, which is a joint partnership with RZSS and the University of St Andrews, will allow chimpanzees to play interactive games voluntarily by presenting the chimps with objects that they learn to manipulate, alongside computer and simulation games to navigate; welcomes the opportunity that this provides for researchers to observe and record their behaviour to investigate the cognition and behaviour of chimpanzees; notes that studies will focus on multiple cognitive aspects such as communication, social learning and coordination to enhance an understanding of the human species, and wishes the research unit, and all those involved, the best of luck in their endeavour, which will be hugely educational for all, especially children.
