World Mental Health Day
The motion
That the Parliament recognises that World Mental Health Day 2019 is an opportunity for everyone to raise awareness of mental health issues and advocate against social stigma; notes that the theme is Suicide and Suicide Prevention; understands that, in 2018, 784 people were believed to have died by suicide in Scotland, approximately 15 people every week, 148 of whom were from the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area; believes with regret that, although the issue touches thousands of people across the country, there is still significant stigma about talking about suicide; understands that around one in five people consider suicide at some point and that research by the Samaritans suggests that 60% of Scots have some direct experience of it, whether from their own feelings, supporting a friend or family member or losing a loved one to suicide; believes that suicides are tragedies that impact on families and communities and have long-lasting effects on the people left behind; notes that the awareness day provides people with an opportunity to add to the wider conversation about the issue; acknowledges the events taking place across Scotland on the day; applauds all who are participating in these, and commends Gary Little, who is an ambassador for the mental health charity, Support in Mind Scotland, on taking part in a comedy evening on 10 October at the Rotunda Comedy Club, Glasgow, with all profits being donated to that organisation.
