New Community Garden in Calton Aims to Help People in Addiction Recovery
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Addaction North East Recovery Hub on founding a new community garden in Calton, which aims to help people in addiction recovery; notes that the project, named Roots to Recovery, encourages people who use Addaction’s support services to get green-fingered and boost their social and mental recovery; understands that the team at Addaction North East Glasgow felt the need to have an outdoor activity that not only helped individuals learn new skills but also boosted their self-esteem, and hopefully nurtured talents and interests that they did not know they had; understands that the community garden team was successful in securing two £500 grants from Clyde Gateway and North East Community Addiction Forum, which helped buy plants and raised flower beds; acknowledges that a group of people in recovery began building the garden and working on it weekly to have it ready for the community open day; understands that the garden is now producing fruit, veg and decorative shrubs, and hopes that the garden will grow and develop as the seasons change and as new people and ideas come along.
