Turmoil in Chile

That the Parliament notes the reported political turmoil in Chile following a student act of civil disobedience against Santiago’s rising metro fares; understands that the government, led by President Sebastián Piñera, responded by declaring a state of emergency and calling in the military to quell protests; further understands that mainly peaceful protests have been responded to by large military action, including several reports of people being taken out of their houses in military vans; expresses concern over reported claims that some civilians have been tortured in police stations and some women have been assaulted; acknowledges what it considers the Scottish Parliament's duty to raise awareness of the situation in Chile, and believes that, in line with the UK Government's 2018 report, Global Britain: The Responsibility to Protect and Humanitarian Intervention, the international community has a responsibility to ensure that these reported cases of military abuse are investigated to ensure peace is restored.
