700th Anniversary of the Stocket Charter
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges the 700th anniversary of the Stocket Charter, which took place on 10 December 2019; understands that this iconic document was signed by King Robert the Bruce in 1319 as a reward to the Granite City for sheltering him as an outlaw; notes that the charter was displayed in Cowdray Hall during a talk on 10 December and is ordinarily held in the Town House in Aberdeen; appreciates that King Robert gave Aberdeen the Forest of Stocket, now the Midstocket area of the city, in return for a yearly rent; understands that the Common Good Fund was created as a result of finances generated from the forest; recognises that this fund helped to create Marischal College and is still used to support a number of charitable causes in the city every year, and looks forward to this fund continuing to benefit the citizens of Aberdeen for many more years to come.
