Doddie Weir Wins the Helen Rollason Award

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Scottish Borders rugby legend, Doddie Weir, on winning the Helen Rollason Award at BBC Sport’s Sports Personality of the Year; recognises that the award is named after Helen Rollason, a BBC Sport presenter, who died from breast cancer in 1999, and is presented for “outstanding achievement in the face of adversity”; understands that Doddie, who played for Melrose and the Newcastle Falcons and won 61 caps for Scotland, was presented with the award for his hard work in launching the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which funds research into motor neurone disease (MND) and seeks to improve the lives of those who have the condition; notes that Doddie, who was diagnosed with MND in 2016, has raised nearly £5 million since he founded the charity in 2017; acknowledges that the award was presented by the Princess Royal who noted that she was grateful for the work that the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation has done in broadening the understanding of MND and its impact; commends Doddie for his indefatigable campaigning and money-raising efforts, and wishes him and the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation all the best for the future.
