Bill Spence's Retirement as Lord-Lieutenant of Orkney

That the Parliament acknowledges the retirement of Bill Spence as Lord-Lieutenant of Orkney; notes that Bill was appointed to the role in February 2014, when he became the eighth Lord-Lieutenant to serve The Queen in Orkney and the 20th holder of the office after its establishment by King George I in 1715; acknowledges that Bill previously served as Deputy Lieutenant in 1978 and as Vice Lord-Lieutenant in 2011, where he ably supported four of his predecessors in the Orkney Lieutenancy; understands that Bill has also generously supported the work of many local charities, organisations and causes during this time, serving as Chairman of The Society of the Friends of St Magnus Cathedral, the Riding the Marches Committee, Kirkwall Lifeboat Station, The Pier Arts Centre Trust and the Association of Honorary Norwegian Consuls in the UK and Ireland; believes that Bill has served all of his roles and duties with great distinction, building on the legacies left to him by his predecessors, of which he can be very proud; recognises Bill’s hard work and dedication over the years, where he has made a significant contribution to communities across Orkney; thanks him for his remarkable service, and wishes Bill, and his wife, Sue, a long, enjoyable and well-earned retirement.
