Lodged by Alex Cole-Hamilton (Scottish Liberal Democrats) Standard Motion 3 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates Asda on removing cartoon characters from its cereal packaging in an attempt to help customers to make healthier choices; notes that the removal of all animated characters from Asda's own-brand cereal packaging will begin in February 2020; understands that this forms part of a wide-ranging health strategy, which includes extensive reformulation activity to improve the nutritional content of Asda's own-label products, including front-of-pack traffic light nutritional information labelling; further understands that Asda has reduced the sugar content of its own-brand cereals by 26% over the last five years, and other snacking products have seen similar changes with the sugar content reduced by 10% from Asda’s yogurts, biscuits, ice creams, milk-based drinks and spreads; acknowledges that, in 2019 alone, Asda removed 11 billion calories from its own-brand products, as well as 1,329 tonnes of fat, 878 tonnes of sugar and 48 tonnes of salt; believes that retailer initiatives such as these play a crucial role in helping customers to make more informed choices, and welcomes Asda's introduction of a new Live Better icon, signposting the healthiest options in its own-brand ranges.
