Recognising Babies’ Rights During Children’s Mental Health Week

The motion

That the Parliament supports the work of NSPCC Scotland to raise awareness of the distinct attachment needs of babies during Children’s Mental Health Week; believes that mental health difficulties often arise in infancy; notes that babies who grow up without positive and stable relationships are at greater risk of mental health problems and other poor outcomes throughout their lives; further notes that very young children are particularly vulnerable to abuse and neglect and the impact of trauma on a young child’s development can be profound; believes that looking after the mental health of babies who have experienced trauma is key to ensuring that they recover and reach their developmental milestones; acknowledges that, with the right support, a baby’s recovery from trauma can be rapid and remarkable but the earlier this happens the better; agrees that mental health services targeted at babies, young children and families are one of the most cost-effective ways of making a positive impact on child development outcomes, and believes that infant mental healthcare, comprising primary, secondary and tertiary interventions, should be an essential part of the current drive to reduce childhood adversity in Scotland.
