Aberdeen City Council Approves Strategy to Promote Community Food-growing

That the Parliament welcomes the approval of Granite City Growing: Aberdeen Growing Food Together 2020, which is Aberdeen’s first food-growing strategy and which runs from 2020 to 2026 in partnership with key stakeholders; acknowledges that this community empowerment strategy will include practical ways to encourage people to grow food in their community and to ensure that food-growing opportunities are available to everyone who wants them; recognises the many potential benefits, including ameliorating food poverty, improving health and wellbeing, reducing food waste and building community resilience; notes that there are 516 allotment plots across Aberdeen city and that the number of people on the waiting list has increased to 306 as at January 2020, which is equivalent to over half of the authority’s current number of allotments, and hopes that Aberdeen City Council will look to allocate more land for allotments in order to enable residents to make food-growing part of a lifestyle that prioritises biodiversity, sustainability and wellbeing.
