Welcoming the Creation of the Bill and Nancy Hewison Fund in Orkney
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the creation of the Bill and Nancy Hewison Fund, which will be used to support Orkney students in their studies and encourage higher education participation across the county; understands that the fund has been established thanks to a generous bequest of £930,000 to Orkney College UHI by Nancy Hewison, a local teacher and artist, and her late husband, William, a journalist and author, who is best known as the former editor of The Orcadian; acknowledges that the legacy fund will support the university’s efforts to identify students and projects in Orkney that require additional financial support; believes that the fund will make a significant difference in opening up opportunities for more people in Orkney to access higher education and enjoy the many lifelong benefits that it can deliver; recognises that this is a fitting tribute to the memory of the late William and Nancy; extends its heartfelt thanks to them for their kindness and generosity in setting up this fund, and looks forward to seeing the impact that this wonderful bequest will have within the Orkney community for years to come.
