International Workers' Memorial Day

Lodged by Neil Findlay Standard Motion 14 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes that 28 April 2020 is International Workers' Memorial Day; understands that the day is marked across the world each year with workers and trade unions coming together to "Mourn the dead and fight for the living" as mark of respect to the people who have been killed, disabled, injured and made ill through their work; notes that West Lothian Trades Union Council holds a memorial service each year at Balbardie Park, but that this will not take place this year due to the COVID-19 crisis; recognises however that workers, unions and the families of the bereaved will pay their respects with a one-minute silence at 11 am and via many online events; believes that the best way to ensure that employees are safe at work is for them to join a union, and encourages all workers to do so.
