The motion

That the Parliament recognises the contribution that Samaritans Scotland volunteers have made to support people in crisis and distress during the COVID-19 pandemic; notes that, currently, one in three contacts to the charity mention concerns about the virus and that its volunteers have reported an increase in the levels of anxiety and concerns regarding loneliness and isolation among the people contacting the helpline; acknowledges that the volunteers offer emotional support and listening 24 hours a day, every day of the year; believes that they provide a critical service, which is needed now more than ever; notes that Volunteering Week 2020, which takes place from 1 to 7 June, is an opportunity to recognise the contribution that such volunteers make to supporting mental health and wellbeing for people and communities across Scotland, particularly during the current period when many people are struggling, and commends the Samaritans Scotland volunteers’ ongoing commitment to be there to listen, day or night, as they continue to provide this vital lifeline for anyone in crisis and distress.
