Paying Tribute to Runa Mackay

Lodged by Pauline McNeill (Scottish Labour) Standard Motion 9 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes the sad passing of Dr Runa Mackay; understands that Dr Mackay graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1944, after which she worked serving the poor of Edinburgh at the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society in the years before the formation of the NHS; further understands that, while working as a paediatrician in 1954, she accepted a six-month locum position in Nazareth, where she remained working to help Palestinian patients for a further 30 years; recognises her later work with Medical Aid for Palestine, initially through working in refugee camps, and in Hebron, before later becoming a trustee and a prolific fundraiser for the charity, and commends a life well lived in the service of the oppressed people of Palestine for over 60 years.
