Urgent Action Required to Stem the Tide of Energy Sector Job Losses
The motion
That the Parliament shares the uneasiness felt throughout the energy sector in response to BP's announcement that 10,000 of its 70,000 office-based workforce worldwide will lose their jobs; notes that, while BP's are the biggest job losses to date, these follow others, including from Technip, Worley, Wood Group, Apache, Oceaneering and North Star Shipping; understands that the UK oil and gas industry is warning that 30,000 jobs could be lost as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the low oil price; believes that a global oversupply of oil has pushed prices to their lowest level in 20 years, and calls on the UK and Scottish governments to do all that they can to support the people affected by major job losses throughout the energy sector.
