The motion

That the Parliament welcomes the news that a team of health professionals from NHS Lanarkshire were part of reportedly the biggest breakthrough so far in the battle against COVID-19; understands that doctors, nurses, pharmacists and research experts who are based across the three NHS Lanarkshire acute hospitals were part of the UK-wide Oxford Recovery Trial, which is testing a number of potential treatments for COVID-19, including dexamethasone; believes that it is thanks to this UK-wide collaboration that it is now known that dexamethasone, a common steroid that costs about £5 for an entire course of treatment, has, it understands, been shown to cut the risk of death by a third for COVID-19 patients on ventilators; further understands that dexamethasone is a treatment already available and affordable so it can be used immediately, and that it works for the very sickest patient with COVID-19; believes that this is the first treatment that is proven to save lives from COVID-19, which can now be used to treat NHS patients, and recognises and congratulates all those taking part in this collaborative effort involving NHS teams across Lanarkshire, Scotland and the UK.
