The motion

That the Parliament notes the fifth anniversary of the Borders Railway, having opened on 6 September 2015, making it the UK's longest newly constructed domestic railway for over 100 years; understands that the line largely follows the previous Waverley Route closed as part of the Beeching cuts in 1969 resulting in local groups being formed that campaigned for the reopening of the line; recognises that it has enjoyed considerable success since its opening with passenger numbers above expectations, and increasing year on year, demonstrating the need for the line and the benefit to local communities; notes the ongoing calls for the line to be extended to join the mainline at Carlisle, and thanks everyone involved in the line, including campaigners, ScotRail and Network Rail staff, volunteers and local community groups who maintain the stations’ flower beds, for their part in its continuing success.
