Bridging the Gap Initiative Launches in Orkney
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the start of a new pen pal initiative in Orkney called Bridging the Gap; understands that the scheme, which has been developed by staff at St Andrews Nursery, aims to bring together different generations in Orkney and help to tackle the risk of social isolation among older people; recognises that the project involves St Andrews Nursery sending packs with drawings from the children who attend the nursery and craft materials being sent to older members of the community who have signed up to participate; notes that those receiving the packs can use the craft materials to send their own artwork back to the nursery; believes that the project has helped to keep the community connected during this difficult time, helping to prevent instances of loneliness and improve people’s wellbeing, while also supporting the learning and skill development of young people; thanks St Andrews Nursery's Early Learning and Childcare Manager, Helen Corbett, and all of her colleagues at the nursery for organising this excellent initiative and supporting everyone to take part, and hopes that the scheme will continue to grow and build many lasting friendships across Orkney for years to come.
