Aberdeen Art Gallery Wins Art Fund Museum of the Year Award
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Aberdeen Art Gallery on it being named one of the five joint winners of the Art Fund Museum of the Year Award, alongside the Gairloch Museum in Wester Ross, the Towner Eastbourne, the South London Gallery and the London Science Museum; understands that the judges were impressed with the scale of the redevelopment of the Aberdeen Art Gallery, which has increased the number of works on show from 370 to 1,080; applauds the initiative of Aberdeen City Council, the support of other funders, led by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the response of the public to the fund-raising campaign mounted by the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums Development Trust, in delivering the £34.6 million revamp that led to the gallery reopening in November 2019; notes that this year, in response to the challenges facing museums as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, the Art Fund increased the prize money to £200,000 to be shared among the five winners, and commends the hard work of the all the staff and volunteers at the Aberdeen Art Gallery and their continuing commitment to make art accessible to all.
