Dundee Macmillan Improving the Cancer Journey Service

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the work that the Dundee Macmillan Improving the Cancer Journey (ICJ) service has been doing to support people affected by the condition; understands that, since its launch in November 2017, it has been sending a letter to every newly-diagnosed cancer patient, offering them a meeting to discuss any practical, emotional or financial needs that they might have with a dedicated one-to-one support worker; notes that, since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the service has adapted one-to-one discussions with patients to now take place over the phone or via a video consulting service that enables people to have health and social care appointments from home or wherever is convenient; welcomes the news that the ICJ has provided over £500,000 in support and benefits for over 300 people since January 2019; understands that a recent study by Macmillan found that one in three people with cancer in Scotland are severely financially impacted by their diagnosis; notes that having cancer can bring all sorts of financial pressures, such as loss of income due to being off work, increased household bills and travel to and from hospital appointments; encourages people to get in touch with the team if they require any support, and congratulates Macmillan and the Dundee Health and Social Care Partnership for rolling out a service that places people at the centre of their care and support.
