Befriending Week 2020
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes Befriending Week 2020, which is celebrated annually from 1 to 7 November and is organised by Befriending Networks; notes that, as lockdown measures came into effect in March 2020, many people experienced loneliness and social isolation in ways they never had before; acknowledges that befriending organisations and volunteers rapidly responded to this growing need for connection; further acknowledges that these continuing measures have highlighted the detrimental effects of loneliness on health and wellbeing, as well as the importance of connection, community and kindness, making Befriending Week even more significant; considers that Befriending Week 2020 is an opportunity to raise awareness about the positive impact that befriending makes in communities and in people’s lives; encourages befriendees, befrienders, staff members, organisations and communities to celebrate befriending; believes that this is also a time to share with the wider public what befriending is, who it is for, how to get involved and the ways in which organisations are tackling loneliness and social isolation through befriending, and commends everyone involved with befriending on their sterling work for the benefit and wellbeing of others.
