16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence 2020
The motion
That the Parliament notes 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence, which takes place every year from 25 November to 10 December; believes that, in 2020, this awareness event is more important than ever; understands that the lockdown measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic are causing an alarming increase in the already existing worldwide problem of violence against women and girls, particularly those who are BME, disabled, involved in commercial sexual exploitation or LGBT+; notes that there has been a sharp increase this year in many forms of violence against women and girls, including domestic abuse; understands that systemic gender inequality is recognised by the Scottish Government as a cause of such violence; notes that research suggests that the pandemic has led to significant detrimental impacts on gender inequality; considers that gender inequality and all forms of violence against women and girls is wholly preventable, and believes that, to end this, everyone should play their part in changing social attitudes, values and structures.
