Stromness Golf Club Secures Lottery Funding
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates Stromness Golf Club’s junior section on securing £7,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund; understands that the funding will be used to make improvements to the nine-hole junior course that will help to widen its accessibility, enhance the course’s longevity and offer more opportunities for young people in the community; acknowledges that this project work will include improvements to four tees that are adversely affected by the wind, the installation of two new bunkers, the upgrading of paths and the widening of access gates to allow players with mobility issues to use electric buggies to play the course; recognises that this will support the club’s impressive efforts to increase junior participation in the sport and help Orkney’s young golfers from grassroots and beyond to develop their skills and enjoy the game; believes that it is important for all clubs, such as Stromness, to have strong and well supported junior sections, not only to allow young people to experience the many benefits of the sport, including in health and wellbeing, but also to allow the club itself to thrive for years to come; commends Dougie Slater, who founded the club’s junior section and is the club coach, along with his team of coaching volunteers, for their exceptional work and commitment to providing opportunities for Orkney’s young people to play the sport, and wishes them and everyone involved at the club all the best for the completion of the improvements and a successful golf season in 2021.
