Wealth Tax in Argentina
The motion
That the Parliament commends the Argentinian Senate for passing a new tax on its wealthiest people, which will help pay for relief measures relating to the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that senators passed the one-off levy by 42 votes to 26, and that those with assets worth more than 200 million pesos, which is approximately $2.5 million or £1.8 million, will have to pay the charge, which is estimated to impact on 12,000 people in a country of 44 million citizens; understands that 20% of the money raised will go to providing medical supplies for the pandemic, 20% to small and medium-sized businesses, 15% to social developments, 20% to student scholarships and 25% to natural gas ventures; believes that, in such a moment of national crisis, those with the most wealth should be called upon to contribute most in helping to deal with the present situation and future recovery, and calls on the Scottish Government to bring forward a similar proposal as a matter of urgency.
