The motion

That the Parliament welcomes No Smoking Day 2021, which takes place on 10 March; considers that the annual event offers an excellent opportunity to highlight the many ways in which quitting smoking can improve people’s mental and physical health; believes that smoking does not help people relax and can actually increase anxiety and stress; understands that ASH Scotland has suggested that evidence it has gathered suggests that smoking can increase the severity of  COVID-19 infections and that many people have found themselves smoking more during the lockdown, as trying to quit at this time has seemed overwhelming; notes however that help and support is available through the national stop smoking service, Quit Your Way Scotland which is run by NHS 24 and is staffed by trained advisors who provide expert advice, including during lockdown periods; commends charities such as ASH Scotland and British Lung Foundation Scotland, as well as NHS 24, on their work in encouraging people to quit smoking; congratulates everyone who has successfully stopped the habit, and encourages people wanting to quit to contact Quit Your Way Scotland.
