Inspiring Coatbridge Woman, Janet Hamilton

The motion

That the Parliament recognises the life and achievements of the Coatbridge poet and essayist Janet Hamilton (1795-1873); notes that this working class woman was taught to read by her mother and taught herself to write; acknowledges that Janet brought to life her village of Langloan, with her accounts of the hard lives of working class women and men during the growing industrialisation of the Coatbridge area; recognises her understanding of the importance of literacy, which led her to work hard to educate her 10 children; considers that her work provides an important insight into the lives of 19th century women, and the social problems and progress that was going on around them, and notes that Janet has been commemorated on 19 March 2021 by the opening of the Janet Hamilton Memorial Fountain in Coatbridge’s West End Park.
