No Tobacco Day 2021

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes No Tobacco Day 2021, which takes place annually on 31 May; supports the campaign day, promoted by the World Health Organisation (WHO), which aims to support 100 million people worldwide to quit tobacco with Commit to Quit as 2021's theme; notes than an estimated eight million people around the world die from tobacco use each year; recognises the Scottish Government's target to reduce smoking rates to below 5% by 2034; further welcomes the proposal for a consultation on Nicotine Vapour Products (NVP) to be launched in 2021; further notes the warnings from WHO of the higher risk of contracting and becoming ill from COVID-19 for those who smoke; believes that greater cessation advice is required in primary care; acknowledges that recent polling by Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation Scotland shows that 81.2% of respondents favour a smoking ban at school gates, with only 4.6% against, and further supports third sector organisations, such as Asthma UK, the British Lung Foundation Scotland, ASH Scotland and the British Heart Foundation in their efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and to promote better lung health.
