The motion

That the Parliament expresses concern over the decision by TSB to close the Savings Bank Museum in Ruthwell, Dumfries and Galloway, and to move the collection from the museum to the TSB Headquarters in Edinburgh; notes that in 1810, Dr. Henry Duncan opened the world's first savings bank in Ruthwell, based on business principles and paying interest on its investors' modest savings, and that the original Ruthwell Parish Bank is now the home of the Savings Bank Museum, which TSB acquired in 1950 for the cost of £1; understands that the eighteenth century building houses a collection of early home savings boxes, coins and bank notes from many parts of the world, that there are books on the worldwide spread of savings banks and that its modest but important archives include documents and letters on the history of savings banks; believes that the Ruthwell Savings Bank is a valuable asset to Dumfries and Galloway's residents and visitors, and that moving the collection to Edinburgh would both be detrimental to Ruthwell, and to the wider Dumfries and Galloway, and would rob the area of a vital asset that places it on the map as the world's home of the savings bank, and calls on TSB to reverse its decision to close the bank and to work with the tourism sector in Dumfries and Galloway to better advertise the museum, to allow it to continue to remain open as a museum of historical importance with significant pride of place.
