Wealth Inequality

The motion

That the Parliament notes reports that Scotland’s wealthiest people saw their fortunes rise sharply over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that one person has even seen their wealth grow by £1.27 billion, with the overall wealth of billionaires increasing by 21.7%; considers that many people in Scotland are struggling financially and that such extremes of wealth and poverty are not acceptable in the 21st century; believes that more equal societies are more economically successful overall, and suggests that taxes impacting on wealth, such as Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax and possibly a one-off levy on excess profits made during the pandemic, should be considered more seriously in order to bolster the recovery of Scotland and the UK.
