Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Day

Lodged by Monica Lennon (Scottish Labour) Standard Motion 3 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament recognises that Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Day is marked each year on 28 May to highlight the importance for women and girls who menstruate to be able to hygienically manage their period safely and with dignity, wherever they are; acknowledges that having inadequate access to menstrual hygiene products during their period can pose a health risk; believes that, this year, this is particularly pertinent for Scotland, as it became the first country to provide free universal access to period products, through the Period Products (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act 2020, which was given Royal Assent in January 2021; commends the work of campaigners, activists and organisations who have worked to ensure that access to period products is a right, not a luxury; supports the continued efforts of international campaign groups and organisations that are looking to Scotland as an example of a period-positive nation, and encourages the Scottish Government to assist in any way it can to ensure period dignity for all no matter where they reside.
