Increase in Trade Union Membership
The motion
That the Parliament welcomes the increase in trade union membership across the UK; understands that it increased by 118,000 in 2020 and this is the fourth year in a row that it has grown; commends the work and dedication of trade unionists across the UK, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, who continue to demand better from their employers, organise to protect their jobs and defend their rights, keep workplaces safe and aim to raise working standards for all; believes that campaigns to increase trade union membership across the gig economy, such that for the recognition of the GMB by Uber, to improve pay and conditions for workers in that sector, have been a positive breakthrough, and supports calls for the UK Government to repeal anti-trade union legislation and outlaw so-called fire and rehire practices.
