Lodged by Gillian Mackay (Scottish Green Party) Standard Motion 31 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament welcomes Aphasia Awareness Month, which takes place in June 2021; recognises that approximately one-third of people who survive a stroke are affected by aphasia, which is caused by brain damage affecting their ability to speak and communicate; notes that an estimated 3,000 people each year in Scotland are left with aphasia after a stroke, leaving people struggling with daily activities and causing significant isolation; commends the support that charities such as Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland provide to people living with aphasia through its Hospital to Home services, and considers that the Parliament can help Scotland become more aphasia friendly through improving understanding and awareness of what aphasia is and how to help people with communication difficulties.
