New Support Service Established for Social Workers
The motion
That the Parliament commends a new free social work support service that aims to alleviate the stress and pressures faced by workers in the profession because of the COVID-19 pandemic; understands that it was established after research by the Social Workers’ Benevolent Trust suggested that up to 75% of social workers described themselves as emotionally and mentally exhausted, with almost 25% seeking professional help; notes that the support service will offer them a platform to talk and think through any issues that they might be facing with a fully-trained volunteer coach; recognises that social workers who want to support their peers can volunteer to become coaches themselves, and will receive full training in coaching and mentoring; recognises that the peer to peer service is being funded by the Scottish Government and delivered by the Scottish Association of Social Work in partnership with Strengthening Practice; praises social workers for their vital and diligent work during the pandemic; acknowledges the additional stress and pressure that the events over this time have put on the sector, and applauds all those who came together to establish this important support service.
