Pay Student Paramedics Campaign Success

Lodged by Liam McArthur (Scottish Liberal Democrats) Standard Motion 20 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Pay Student Paramedics campaign on its well-deserved victory, securing a new bursary ahead of the start of the new academic term; notes that the campaign was started by a group of student paramedics in August 2020 to highlight the discrepancy between the bursaries made available to students paramedics and those studying other disciplines, and to press for equivalent funding to be made available to all Scottish student paramedics; recognises that reports have shown a majority of student paramedics have lived below the poverty line despite being expected to work the same hours as fully-qualified paramedics, and therefore have limited time to take on additional work to fund their studies; acknowledges that the Scottish Parliament held a debate on the issue in October 2020; appreciates the pivotal role that paramedics have played in meeting the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that student paramedics have stepped up at a time of great need; acknowledges that student paramedics, unlike student nurses and midwives, have until now had no access to a bursary scheme to support them during their degree course; hails this as a great achievement for student paramedics across the country, and hopes the decision will now encourage more young people to enter the profession.
