The Erskine Bridge Turns 50

Lodged by Marie McNair (Scottish National Party) Standard Motion 8 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament commemorates 50 years of the Erskine Bridge, which was the first link between West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire over the River Clyde, replacing the Erskine Ferry; understands that the crossing was opened on 2 July 1971 by HRH Princess Anne and for a period of time, it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world; notes that the bridge is 1.3km in length and 30m wide, with its tallest support measuring 50m, allowing it to play an important role in carrying over 35,000 vehicles every day; acknowledges that the Erskine Bridge has been listed for unique architectural and technical features, and remains one of the most ambitious civil engineering projects ever undertaken in Scotland, so it’s important to recognise the impact it has made in the past 50 years.
