The motion

That the Parliament recognises the work of Thomas Abercromby and Holly Takenzire in curating the You’re Never Done exhibition at the former Springburn Library and Museum as part of the 2021 Glasgow International Festival; notes that it was a group exhibition featuring works by the local and international artists, Adelita Husni-Bey, Gabecare (Rachel Adams, Tessa Lynch), G.O.D.S. (Glasgow Open Dance School), Harriet Rose Morley, and Tara Marshall-Tierney, which explored the invisible narratives of labour within cities; understands that the exhibition was inspired by Glasgow’s public washhouses, known as "steamies", and the wages for housework movement, and was intended to take the form of a collaborative space created to address the gendered division of labour and visibility within working-class communities; acknowledges that, since the outbreak of COVID-19, the sudden shift in the working practices of many people has provided an important opportunity to recognise that the world’s economies and the maintenance of people's daily lives are built on the invisible and often unpaid labour of women, and that the show was a gesture towards reclaiming spaces, reimagining the labour of women, and politicising the lack of art resources within communities in north Glasgow; commends the rescue and redisplay of the Springburn Maiden sculptures by James Milne Sherriff, from 1902, which once decorated the Springburn Public Halls, which were tragically demolished in 2012, and supports the community-led effort to find a suitable permanent location in the local area for the public redisplay of these iconic artefacts from Springburn’s past industrial glory.
