Srebrenica Memorial Day 2021
The motion
That the Parliament acknowledges that 11 July was the anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide, which was marked by memorial events across the country, such as that organised by the Grampian Regional Equality Council, mosques and community organisations in the North East of Scotland; recognises that 8,372 men and boys were murdered in the town in eastern Bosnia-Herzegovina, and that the victims were predominantly Bosnian Muslims; understands that at the time of the conflict the Scottish Refugee Council helped evacuate 400 Bosnian refugees to Scotland; further acknowledges and affirms the importance of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and 1967 Protocol, of which the core principle asserts that a refugee should not be returned to a country where they face serious threats to their life or freedom; believes that this must be reflected in the treatment of all those seeking asylum within the UK, and recognises the hugely valuable work done by Remembering Srebrenica to fight hatred and intolerance.
