South African Social Upheaval

Lodged by Bill Kidd Standard Motion 12 supporters

The motion

That the Parliament notes the current situation in South Africa, which has reportedly seen hundreds of that country's citizens lose their lives, homes and livelihoods in social upheaval caused by a determined minority of rioters and looters taking advantage of what it believes to be a period of political uncertainty in that country; believes that there are many South Africans who live in Scotland, who are dismayed that a country that was built on the shoulders of Nelson Mandela (known as Madiba, or Father) as a land of hope, striving to be better and living under the philosophy of Ubuntu (Humanity), appears to have lost its way, but considers that it can still come together again in a civil society, which will stand united going forward.
