Asthma and Household Products Health Warnings
The motion
That the Parliament notes with concern recent research by Smartline, which suggests that many household cleaning products, paints and cosmetics containing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can significantly increase the risk of adults developing asthma, and exacerbate existing asthma symptoms; understands that around 368,000 people in Scotland live with a diagnosis of asthma, including 72,000 children; notes that, following the research, calls have been made for products with VOCs to carry health warnings for people with asthma and other lung conditions, and welcomes the advice from Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation, which outlines both the impact of indoor air pollution, including VOCs, and steps that people with lung conditions can take to minimise the risks of indoor air pollution, such as ventilating the home, or other spaces, where using these products.
