Stop Cambo

The motion

That the Parliament considers that the proposed Cambo oil field, which would be situated off the coast of Shetland, would cause significant harm to Scotland, and the world; notes that the heavy crude oil field contains over 800 million barrels of oil and, if drilling is approved, the first stage of the project would extract between 150 and 170 million barrels of oil, the equivalent of running between 16 and 18 coal-fired power stations for a year; considers that climate change is an existential crisis that needs urgent and radical action; believes that the Cambo oil field is at odds with Scotland’s aims of being net zero by 2045 and the global goals of the Paris Agreement; supports calls on the UK Government to stop the Cambo oil field and urges both the UK Government and Scottish Government to act faster to reduce demand for fossil fuels; further supports calls for focus to be prioritised on transitioning to a low-carbon economy, with a clear industrial plan and consultation with trade unions and workers, particularly from the oil and gas sector, to ensure a just transition for workers and communities across Scotland, and is concerned that approving the Cambo project ahead of COP26 will undermine the UK Government's position at the crucial summit.
