76th Dumfries and Galloway Burns Association Brow Well Gathering
The motion
That the Parliament congratulates the Dumfries and Galloway Burns Association (DGBA) on planning the 76th anniversary of its annual club gathering at the Brow Well, near the village of Ruthwell, to lay a wreath in commemoration of the death of Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns, who died on 21 July 1796; notes that the Brow Well, a water pit, rich in iron and other salts, which were believed to have many properties beneficial to health in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, was where Burns went to seek a cure for what we now know was rheumatic fever, on the advice of his doctor, William Maxwell; understands that this year’s Brow Well ceremony, which is taking place in a socially-distanced way, in line with COVID-19 guidelines, will hear from club president, Fiona Evans, Robert Burns World Federation president, Marc Sherland, Ruthwell Church minister, Reverend Moule, as well as songs from Leona Evans, Alan Beck and Willie McRobert, and a lament from Howff Club piper, Callum Watson; notes that representatives from local Dumfries and Galloway Burns Association clubs and other Burnsians will also be in attendance, and wishes the Dumfries and Galloway Burns Association well for the gathering, and every success for the future.
