An Gorta Mór Memorial Unveiled in Glasgow

The motion

That the Parliament congratulates the Coiste Cuimhneachain An Gorta Mór (The Great Hunger Memorial Committee) on the successful unveiling of the memorial to The Great Hunger of 1845-1852 at St Mary’s Parish in Calton, Glasgow; thanks Canon Tom White for agreeing to house the statue in the grounds of the second oldest parish in the city, where many of those who fled the famine became parishioners; welcomes the attendance of Irish Consul General Jane McCulloch; commends the workmanship of John McCarron who designed and crafted the Tower of Silence sculpture; recognises the economic, social and cultural contribution that the Irish diaspora have made to Glasgow and Scotland since 1845; remembers the struggle and sacrifice made by those from Ireland who sought refuge in Scotland; commits to welcoming all who seek to call Scotland home regardless of race, religion or ethnicity, and resolves to strengthen the fraternal ties between Scotland and Ireland.
